Boarding a metro on a station and sitting on the floor when it is full is a routine that we all are aware of. The same thing happened to us when we- me, my baby and his nanny boarded the female coach of the metro on Saturday evening. The metro was occupied by many women sitting comfortably on the floor. We got a place alongside the seats and since we had lots of luggage, we opted to sit on the floor. My baby dislikes being seated when he has the opportunity to interact with so many people, so my nanny sat there with the bags and I started taking a walk with my baby in the coach. After some time, he became restless, so we started playing with other kids to distract him. We were offered seats to sit by many generous ladies but I knew he wouldn’t sit in one place for long and declined the offers.
Meanwhile, as and when there was space in between two women, I made him stand there to see the lights and traffic outside to distract him briefly but to no avail. Eventually, I decided to feed him. As he has recently learned to eat by himself, he happily opted for the option and sat next to one of the girls (there was no vacant seat, only space created by the girl). Soon, that girl deboarded and I sat there continuing to feed him as we were just 4 stations away. But just before our station, he jumped down asking me to take him outside. Thankfully, our station (MG road) was next to come and we all happily deboarded and headed off to our home.
Little did we know that this journey will become a victim of sick journalism and haunt us thereafter. During the time when I was trying to calm down my baby, a lady (Ms. Sanya Dhingra, a journalist at ThePrint) boarded the train between Malviya Nagar and MG road. She asked my nanny as to why didn’t she take one of the vacant seats, just when we left that station since that time the metro had many unoccupied seats. Our nanny, who is a very nice and simple lady, told her that she is comfortable there but since Ms. Dhingra kept staring at her, I told her that we are about to get down and we are with lots of luggage so we are ok, thanks for asking. After that, our station came, I took one of the bags and baby;, the nanny took two bags and we got down on MG Road. Ms. Dhingra who was standing right there at the door witnessed everything.
Since I am not very active on social media, it was only later that I learnt that Ms. Dhingra tweeted a picture of us in the midst of all that confusion, our nanny sitting on the floor with the caption, “Seen in Delhi metro: Mother and child take seats while the child’s nanny sits on the floor on a fairly empty train. Caste/class discrimination really is space-agnostic.” As if this was not enough, an article appeared on ThePrint on Monday written by none other than Mr Shekhar Gupta, with the now viral picture at the top, being used as an example to “tell us more than a thousand words on our class differences and the way we treat our domestic workers”, as the author himself put it, quoting our example, and clubbing it with other harsh cases of “servant” exploitation. I was left dumbstruck and furious at the same time.
I decided to confront Ms. Dhingra and called her, asking her how she could such a hideous and unethical thing to us when she has witnessed everything with her own eyes. She saw me struggling with my child, she saw us shifting from one window to the other just to pacify him, she saw him cry to get down on the train. Moreover, when she asked my nanny, she without hesitation told her that she is comfortable sitting on the floor and then I explained to her that we have many bags as well and we are about to get down. She saw us struggle to carry those bags together and she still went ahead with all this. She took advantage of the situation, took our picture without our knowledge and proceeded to accuse us of something we didn’t even do. The bags were conveniently removed from the picture for her benefit. She said she was sorry for putting me in such a situation but whatever she has done, it is part of her job and she has full right to do so since our legal system gives her the right of free speech and expression. I requested her to please remove the picture from social media so that it is not used by others again in an incorrect context but she refused and made it clear that she would neither remove, nor apologize.
This now puts me in a difficult situation. A person who doesn’t know either me or my nanny, who doesn’t know the other side of the story, will carry the most repulsive impression of our family. It’s heartbreaking that this picture will continue to be used without any context and portray us as exploiters. How can journalists go around indulging in such irresponsible behavior without any consequences?
I am a doctor at AIIMS, Delhi and we, at this premier institute, continuously serve the poor and others who find themselves in a severely challenging time in their lives. We interact with these people day in and day out; then, how can I, being in public service, misbehave with a lady who stays with me, who takes care of my baby just because she is poor. We share equal household responsibilities. We, stay in a rented flat near AIIMS so that we can be easily accessible in needs of emergency and here we do not have any separate servant quarter- there goes the “space discrimination”. So she stays with us, eats with us, laughs with us, travels with us and even sleeps where we sleep. It pains me that all it takes to be maligned in this day and age is one out of context picture and an irresponsible journalist.
And what am I supposed to do now? Spend my time figuring out how to tell people the real story or give time to my patients? I didn’t have any twitter or facebook account up until now but because this started becoming overwhelming and unbearable, I had to bring the whole story before everyone.
You should file defamation against the irresponsible journalist and make her issue a pulbic apology

Yes, she should file FIR for violating a private citizen’s privacy. Privacy is also fundamental right above the freedom of expression of a journalist about a private citizen.

Please file a defamation case on this journalist…trying to get new stories and meeting up their own target …by spoiling others personal life ..is no honest journalism
Also why don’t do a thorough ground research before publishing the story …and then post any thing on social media

You must put forth your side of the story too. We’ve no dearth of people who see the whole world blue, black, and devilish. They want this earht to be stamped as hell only (for their own selfish motives), they should be questioned on such acts as they originate viewpoints and influence people who have not even expereinced any negativity. They are no less than other fanatic groups (like the ones propagating hindudatva); both want distortions and victory over each other.

have some chowkidar or security guard you know, stalk that retard jurno and take pics. Pick one of them showing her at a disadvantage in manner or form and paste it all over the social media.
And then explain your side of the train journey story once again and ask folks what they think of a woman who takes pics of a mother and her baby and uses it to further her own resume.
That she didn’t even bother to apologise shows you what kind of a mother she herself would become: try and take a pic of her reprimanding her own young and caption it child abuse and plaster it on the walls in front of her own house.
She should have apologised. She didn’t. She doesn’t really deserve any sympathy.
Take the war to her. Let such irresponsible journalists learn some lessons. Our media is full of reporters like her splashing headlines about anything that they can twist for the sake of scoops. Our media has become notorious for not asking the proper questions, for taking things out of context and slinging mud at anyone and everyone merely for the sake of headlines.
Ultimately, it is such reporters – and those who fall for their ‘scoops’ – who will destroy the integrity of the press and force their audience to lose faith in reportage.
Shame on her.

Very good suggestion. I would go further. Hire somebody to take about 10-20 photographs of the lady, sitting standing , talking to others, eating golgappas and like. Create some nasty stories around those photographs and threaten to post on SM (But actually not-You cannot stoop low to violate the dignity of a lady in spite of whatever she has done to you) May be this will make her realize her folly. She is an immature eager to get fame through any
means fair or unfair.

Mam, I completely agree with you and the fact that such journalist will donalst anything to get social media cred and malign an honest, hard working person like you without knowing the complete story. I think you should lawyer up and litigate her. This is completely irresponsible and immoral and she should be held responsible for such behaviour.

After all that description of events, I still didn’t understand “WHY” your nanny needed to sit on the floor in spite of empty seats being available. Saying “she was comfortable / fine” is hardly an explanation, I’m interested in knowing why you didn’t her to sit on a vacant seat once they were available / offered? Or was tending to your bags by sitting close to them (on the floor) something you expected as a duty from her?

The other day in metro, a seat got vacated. A man standing closer to it and could have taken it, invited me to sit instead. I assumed he was getting down at the next station, but he got off some three or four stations later. I am sure you have deep suspicions about why he offered me the seat, but I think he just liked to stand.

Who cares? The only important question is, is this “caste discrimination”? Can ThePrint prove “caste discrimination”? If they cannot prove it, they should not publish the story, because then it becomes libel. They have libeled an innocent civilian, potentially making it difficult/dangerous for that civilian to earn money.
This innocent person could actually lose their employment thanks to the libel of the ThePrint journalist
ThePrint should be sued for crores of money, they are guilty of defamation.

Sad commentary fm both angles. The doctor should know the luggage limitations in a metro train. Secondly eating or drinking is prohibited in metro trains. Thirdly sitting on floor is also not permitted. All these announcements are regularly made in the train. Being an educated person, the doctor broke all rules. As for looking after luggage by sitting on flopt is hardly justifiable. The doctor should have prevailed upon the maid to occupy a seat. Journo action has a question but doctor broke more rules and disregarded humane aspect towards maid. No one knows how she treats her at home. Matter of conjecture.

For some “journalists”… Fame > Ethics.
This is the same “journalist” that spread fake news about me as well. When I brought it up that she was LYING, she thought it was funny and laughed it off.
Its a sad state of affairs that some media people will go to any length just to attract eyeballs… even if it means besmirching the reputation of someone that can’t defend herself. Sources have told me a bunch of unsavory things about her (which I won’t put here on a family forum). If someone is ambitious and “will do anything for it”, then its between them and their conscience.
Anyway, I’m glad that these fake stories and fake journalists are getting exposed.

These journalists operate with impunity because Indians never really call them out for it. In the West these stories will lead to million dollar lawsuits, so journalists are very careful.
Your sister can easily say that her future earnings might be impaired by this “journalism”, and ThePrint should be accountable for those costs and for lawyer fees.
In fact, I strongly encourage you to sue them….imagine what they can do to other people in India. Their filthy stories might lead to the deaths of innocents in India, if they are not stopped/checked through lawsuits.

Classism within Indian society is a huge issue – the unwritten rules of everyone ‘knowing their place’. We will probably need a few generations to overcome this. However, the journalist is projecting her own notions of justice upon the nanny. It is possible, the nanny comes from a background where all that she has ever known is her ‘inferior’ place in society. Many people (usually laborers, domestic workers etc.) will choose to sit on the floor even if a seat is empty on the Metro. While this is unfortunate and symbolic of our classist society, we can’t expect everyone to understand (and then act) based on our privileged understanding of socio-economic issues. That in itself, can be viewed as classist and part of the problem! And it’s okay if the nanny chooses to make a living rather than battle centuries of socioeconomic class warfare on the Metro.
Moreover, it’s surprising to see the photo be used without explicit permission of the Doctor, AND THE NANNY! Smacks of the privileged “I know what’s best for you” nonsense that the journalist is apparently trying to address.
